Running your own business is now the new 'Rock Star' status. Trust me, it really is!
Years ago people would generally shy away from running their own business, simply due to the perceived expensive start up costs, the hassle that can go with running a business and the general tax expense. However, with the introduction of the internet, more and more people are now starting businesses than ever before. When I started my first business in 2005 I had to pay for an expensive course to teach me the basics. If i was starting today, much of the information I received back then is now freely available on the world wide web. For example, you can learn a huge amount about running a business simply by visiting the UK's Business Link website. There are also many online chat forums and other useful facilities that mean you don't have to spend any money at all in order to learn the ropes.
So, what are the advantages of running your own business? Well, there are many! Here's just a few to get you started:
1. You are your own boss.
Having personally worked for someone else for 20 years I can safely say that running a business has many benefits. I get to call the shots. Yes, if things go wrong it is down to me, but I actually enjoy the level of responsibility that goes with the role of 'entrepreneur'.
2. You can work as little or as often as you like.
Personally, this is my favourite part. I work when i want and how often i want. Nobody tells me that I have to work on certain days or at certain times. In fact, I very rarely get up before 8am nowadays and I NEVER leave home during the rush hour.
3. I earn what I want.
If I want a pay rise, then I'll have one.
4. It's fun.
There is no two ways about it, running your own business is fun. Yes, it can be stressful at times, but so can any job.
So, as you will see, there are many benefits to running your own business. You get to call the shots and you also get to do what you want. When I was first contemplating running my own business I said to myself - "If I don't do it now, when will I do it?" 18 months on and my first business was voted as one of the top 10 best new businesses in the UK! My advice is this:
- Never underestimate your own abilities;
- Go for it and reach for the stars; the bigger your goal the better;
- Be patient. It can take a little while to get there;
- Don't be frightened of making mistakes. That's how you learn!
Finally, if you take the plunge and start your own business, always try to mix with people who are more epxerienced than yourself. Contact a millionaire out of the blue and offer to take them to lunch. It will be money well worth spending.
